This is Lola, she wears glasses and has a pet cat with ginger hair called Biscuit. Lola is very good at maths and puzzles, she is rather quiet and doesn’t seem to spend much time with the other children at school. Some children in her class say she is shy and they think she doesn’t like to play with them, but Lola does like to play it’s just, Lola has autism, Or – tiz – um
Lots of people have autism and it affects each of them in different ways. Some children with autism may be very good at things like maths and puzzles just like Lola. Other children with autism might be good at music or art, but what children with autism struggle with most is, speaking to and playing with other children. Loud noises or bright lights, certain smells and how things feel can also be a problem for children with autism.
Most people with autism can find it difficult to do things that you or I might think are easy, like making friends or telling jokes, but this doesn’t mean they don’t like you, it just means it might take them more time to understand or that you need to play with them in a different kind of way.
Why not join Lola in ‘Lola at the Library’ where she discovers she has an incredible SUPER POWER and has a close call with one of her teachers.
